My volunteer work

Chinese philosopher Mencius once observed “Expend the respect of the aged in one’s family to that of other families; expend the love of the young ones in one’s family to that of other families.” It is a traditional virtue for Chinese nation to respect the aged and care for the young. I have caught several opportunities to be work at Nanjing Sanatorium for retired cadres as a volunteer and I also got some employability skills.

From February 9tth to May 1st of this year, I volunteered at Nanjing Sanatorium for retired cadres. This sanatorium is at Suo JIng Cun and Maggie’s mother worked at here. They told me what my jobs are and taught me how to do on the first day. My jobs are caring the older when they to have IV in the medical office which belongs to sanatorium for retired cadres. It is like a free clinic. However, nobody would come to there in the afternoon. So, I had another job is counting and dividing the different medicine. It always took me plenty of time to carefully report.

In the beginning, I thought caring the older or reporting medicines would be a piece of cake, but I changed my thought after the first day I worked. Once I forwardly helped a old man, I wanted to help him to take medicine from nurses but he looks unhappy and quiet. After he left, I asked nurses why he looked a little bit angry. Nurses told me the older also would like to be independent. They didn’t like to play a sole as a weak person who need helps in front of us. I felt embarrassed as I misunderstand his thoughts. Through this incident, I realized too enthusiastic or too inhospitality both is not good. When I have a communion with strangers, I should carefully watch what he is doing and saying.

Another day, a druggist and I had duties to repot medicines what were counted and divided by me. He told me a successful druggist must be very careful and calm. Sometimes they were as important as a doctor, but they worked at the backstage. He was taciturn and he always focused on work. He looked nice easygoing but I once saw he blaming a young nurse. He was angry because she took a mistake. Maggie’s mother told me there is no mistake in hospital, even a medical office in the sanatorium. He was strict to a nurse because he wanted her to know to be serious when she was working. I learned from her experience to spend more time carefully checking my work.

I have experienced as a volunteer and a trainee. I have become more responsible, patient and careful. I also learned how to have a communion with a stranger and found the right attitude is the premise of success. This is an indelible and valuable experience at this sanatorium for retired cadres. I am very proud of contributing my community and improve my social skills.

I look forward coming here next time.

My Volunteer work

My partners and I were tried after working~

Mr. Harris and me at the new PE office~

My friends with me neaten the PE equipments!

Recently, I did some works as a volunteer for my Community Involvement. From last year to 2009 January 9, I helped my teachers Mr. Harris and Mr. Wu with my friends after school. I spent 11.5 hours working totally and I have the log and photos to prove and remember that. In my opinion, it is a good chance for me to practice and improve my ability in different ways. Let me show you my volunteer experience from the society. Enjoy it ...

I spent 8.5 cleaning, organizing and planning our new PE office for Mr. Harris who is Grade 10 PE teacher. My partners and I put all the PE equipments out of the room first, this is a huge project because it is so difficult for girls to take these weightily equipments, including badmintons, hockey, chesses and others. After that, we swept and mop the floor, wiped the windows and tables. Then, we needed to place all the PE equipments in the correct spots again, we improved our work speed at this time because we got some skills how to decide works to everyone and cooperate. Not only we organize this office, but also we have to make everything neat. We did the great job on time, and our achievement belongs to everyone whom contributed time and energy to be a volunteer. I learn the cooperation is based on the team spirit, communion and intellection with partners.

The next project is helping Mr. Wu to make the nets for puck because it is difficult to buy in China. I spent extra hours helping him weave the nets with other two girls. My job was holding the nets, guiding and managing my partners. The second girl controlled a special needle which is made of the metal for knitting, the third girl held the string which threaded the needle. Knitting a net is more complicated than knitting a sweater because knitting nets need there people to work together, it doesn’t your own work. I should do talk with my partners and think about which part belongs to me or her, and we need to supervise and urge each other. If we had taken made any mistake, we might have knitted again. It doesn’t only need me to de practical, but also need me to be careful whenever I work. Little by little, knitting teaches me a lot in my life and studies. It teaches me the attitude how to face a problem, it is important for me to calm down.

I learn about the most importance of a volunteer is honest, ardor and hardworking, but first you like this job what you are doing, and keep the passion and attention whenever you work. In addition, the most importance of a group is cooperation and solidarity, which means we should work heart to heart without bias. Undoubtedly, it is fair and advantageous for everyone. Communion, cooperation, practice and keeping a good attitude are skills required to work effectively and safely, we succeed as individual and collaborative workers.

On the other hand, it has given me a space to improve my own ability and developed my communion with others; volunteer also let me into society little by little because it is different from what we study at school. I enjoy it, did you?

I hope I have more chances and times to be a member of some charity organization at next time.I can do better.
